וקם ואזל ויהונתן על לקרתא:
lqrtha el wyhwnthn wazl wqm
Then David came to Nob to Ahimelech the priest. Ahimelech came to meet David trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no man with you?”

ואתא דוד לנוב לות אחימלך כהנא ואתבעית אחימלך לקדמות דוד ואמר ליה מא דין את בלחודך וגבר לית עמך:
emk lyth wgbr blkhwdk ath dyn ma lyh wamr dwd lqdmwth akhymlk wathbeyth khna akhymlk lwth lnwb dwd watha
David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has commanded me to do something, and has said to me, ‘Let no one know anything about the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you. I have sent the young men to a certain place.’

ואמר דוד לאחימלך כהנא מלכא פקדני פתגמא ואמר לי אנש לא ידע מדעם ית פתגמא דאנא שלח לך ודפקדתך וית עולימיא שלחית קדמי לאתר כסי וטמיר:
wTmyr ksy lathr qdmy shlkhyth ewlymya wyth wdpqdthk lk shlkh dana pthgma yth mdem yde la ansh ly wamr pthgma pqdny mlka khna lakhymlk dwd wamr
Now therefore what is under your hand? Please give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever is available.”

וכען מה אית כא תחות ידך חמשא טולמין דלחמא הב בידי או מה דאשתכח:
dashthkkh mh aw bydy hb dlkhma Twlmyn khmsha ydk thkhwth ka ayth mh wken
The priest answered David, and said, “I have no common bread, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.”

ואתיב כהנא ית דוד ואמר לית לחם חולין לתחות ידי אלהין לחמא דקדשא אית ברם אם נטרין עולימיא לחוד מסואבת אתתא:
aththa mswabth lkhwd ewlymya nTryn am brm ayth dqdsha lkhma alhyn ydy lthkhwth khwlyn lkhm lyth wamr dwd yth khna wathyb
David answered the priest, and said to him, “Truly, women have been kept from us as usual these three days. When I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was only a common journey. How much more then today shall their vessels be holy?”

ואתיב דוד ית כהנא ואמר ליה בקשטא אתתא מרחקא לנא כמאתמלי ומדקדמוהי במפקי והוה מניהון לעולימיא דכן לקדשא והוא באורח חולא הוה אזיל ויומא דין הוה מתאכיל ולא מתפסל במנא:
bmna mthpsl wla mthakyl hwh dyn wywma azyl hwh khwla bawrkh whwa lqdsha dkn lewlymya mnyhwn whwh bmpqy wmdqdmwhy kmathmly lna mrkhqa aththa bqshTa lyh wamr khna yth dwd wathyb
So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the show bread that was taken from before Yahweh, to be replaced with hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

ויהב ליה כהנא קדשא ארי לא הוה תמן לחם חולין אלהין לחם אפיא דמעדן מן קדם יי לשויותיה לחם חמים ביום אתנסיבותיה:
athnsybwthyh bywm khmym lkhm lshwywthyh yy qdm mn dmedn apya lkhm alhyn khwlyn lkhm thmn hwh la ary qdsha khna lyh wyhb
Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Yahweh; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the best of the herdsmen who belonged to Saul.

ותמן גברא מעבדי שאול ביומא ההוא כניש קדם יי ושמיה דואג אדומא רב רעיא דלשאול:
dlshawl reya rb adwma dwag wshmyh yy qdm knysh hhwa bywma shawl mebdy gbra wthmn
David said to Ahimelech, “Isn’t there here under your hand spear or sword? For I haven’t brought my sword or my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.”

ואמר דוד לאחימלך אלו אית כא תחות ידך מורניתא או חרבא ארי אף חרבי ואף מני לא נסבית בידי ארי הוה פתגם מלכא בבהילו:
bbhylw mlka pthgm hwh ary bydy nsbyth la mny wap khrby ap ary khrba aw mwrnytha ydk thkhwth ka ayth alw lakhymlk dwd wamr
The priest said, “Behold, the sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the valley of Elah, is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you would like to take that, take it, for there is no other except that here.” David said, “There is none like that. Give it to me.”

ואמר כהנא חרבא דגלית פלשתאה דקטלתא במישר בוטמא הא היא מכרכא בשושיפא בתר דשאול ליה באפודא אם יתה תסב לך סב ארי לית אוחרי בר מנה הכא ואמר דוד לית דכותה הבנא לי:
ly hbna dkwthh lyth dwd wamr hka mnh br awkhry lyth ary sb lk thsb ythh am bapwda lyh dshawl bthr bshwshypa mkrka hya ha bwTma bmyshr dqTltha plshthah dglyth khrba khna wamr
David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

וקם דוד וערק ביומא ההוא מן קדם שאול ואתא לות אכיש מלכא דגת:
dgth mlka akysh lwth watha shawl qdm mn hhwa bywma werq dwd wqm
The servants of Achish said to him, “Isn’t this David the king of the land? Didn’t they sing to one another about him in dances, saying, ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?”

ואמרו עבדי אכיש ליה הלא דין דוד מלכא דארעא הלא לדין משבחין בחנגיא למימר קטל שאול באלפין ודוד ברבון:
brbwn wdwd balpyn shawl qTl lmymr bkhngya mshbkhyn ldyn hla darea mlka dwd dyn hla lyh akysh ebdy wamrw
David laid up these words in his heart, and was very afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

ושוי דוד ית פתגמיא האלין בלביה ודחיל לחדא מן קדם אכיש מלכא דגת:
dgth mlka akysh qdm mn lkhda wdkhyl blbyh halyn pthgmya yth dwd wshwy
He changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down on his beard.

ואשני ית טעמיה בעיניהון ואשתמם בידיהון ומסרט על דשי תרעא ומחת ריריה על דקניה:
dqnyh el ryryh wmkhth threa dshy el wmsrT bydyhwn washthmm beynyhwn Temyh yth washny
Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you see the man is insane. Why then have you brought him to me?

ואמר אכיש לעבדוהי הא כד חזיתון דגבר שטי הוא למא איתיתון יתיה לותי:
lwthy ythyh aythythwn lma hwa shTy dgbr khzythwn kd ha lebdwhy akysh wamr
Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Should this fellow come into my house?”
